Where Independent Music Finds Its Voice

Interview with Piotr Krępeć – A Journey Through Music, Culture, and Artistic Growth

We had the pleasure of speaking with Piotr Krępeć, a talented acoustic guitarist and composer from Poland, whose journey with music is as unique as his sound. With a career spanning classical roots to deeply expressive improvisations on the baritone guitar, Piotr has crafted a distinctive style that resonates with fans worldwide.

From Classical Beginnings to Acoustic Freedom

Piotr’s musical journey began at the young age of ten with classical guitar, but over time, he felt constrained by the rigid structures of classical music. Seeking more freedom of expression, Piotr transitioned to acoustic guitar, where he found the creative liberty he craved. “I dropped the chains of stiffness and was reborn as a composer,” he shares. Today, Piotr’s music combines elements of jazz and neo-classical improvisation, enhanced by a unique tuning method (flat Nashville tuning at 432 Hz) that gives his music a resonant, meditative quality.

An International Artistic Experience

Piotr’s career has taken him far beyond Poland. Notably, he has been invited to perform in China three times, including a special guest appearance at the Zhejiang Guitar Festival. “It was a beautiful time for me,” he reflects, describing the joy of sharing his music across cultures and the sense of gratitude for the connections formed.

Creating and Performing with Icons

Beyond his solo work, Piotr has shared the stage with global fingerstyle icons like Andy McKee, Jon Gomm, and Calum Graham. In Poland, he has collaborated with prominent musicians and artists, gaining invaluable insights that have shaped his music and worldview. His connections with Polish painters Tadeusz Pfeiffer and Andrzej Cisowski enriched his artistic journey, leading to collaborations that crossed the boundaries of art forms.

A Life of Exploration and Expression

Piotr Krępeć passionately playing an acoustic guitar with an intense, focused expression.Piotr’s spirit of exploration led him and his wife on a six-month bus journey across Europe, which inspired his album Movement in Silence. This creative pilgrimage, spanning countries from Norway to Spain, allowed Piotr to craft a soundscape that captures the serene yet dynamic beauty of the continent.

The global pause of the COVID-19 pandemic saw Piotr withdraw from live performances, giving him the space to compose, explore new art forms like beekeeping, and begin writing his book, The Power of Creativity. After the pandemic, he expanded his creative pursuits into the theatrical world, collaborating with the Theater in Radom to score and perform live music for a production, providing him with a new form of artistic expression.

The Present and Future of Piotr Krępeć’s Music

Currently, Piotr is working on Impromptu Session 2, a collaborative album with pianist Kris Górski. He envisions more European and global concerts and the creation of a fully composed solo album in the coming years. For Piotr, each piece of music is an invitation to listeners to rest, relax, and focus—a valuable experience in today’s fast-paced world.

A Memorable Artistic Moment

One of Piotr’s most cherished memories was performing at a viewpoint high above the treetops. Inspired by the clouds, he played long forms resembling their movement. The next day, a fellow artist began painting as Piotr played. She, too, was inspired by clouds—a testament to the unspoken, universal language of art that Piotr’s music embodies.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Piotr Krępeć, I am a guitarist from Poland.

How was your passion for music born? Who are your idols?

I started playing guitar at the age of 10. Initially, I played classical music, then fingerstyle, and now I play my own repertoire on the baritone guitar. I like improvised music and jazz. I’m inspired by artists such as Esbjorn Svensson, Pat Metheny, Sławek Jaskułke, Szymon Białek.

What kind of music do you do?

I play only my own repertoire on the acoustic baritone guitar. It is largely improvised music. It’s hard to say exactly what style this is. Maybe a kind of combination of jazz and neo classical. I use non-standard tuning of the instrument. I tune in flat neshvile tuning and that is unique to my music. I like silence in music and simple form.

What is the most important song for you? What message do you want to convey to the listener?

I really like the music from my album “Simple”. It’s basically one long song. Improvisation

Why should a listener who doesn’t know you listen to your music?

Good question. Because my music allows you to rest and relax. It also requires concentration. This is good work for today’s times.

What are your future projects? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I am currently working on an album titled Impromptu Session 2 with pianist and my friend Kris Górski. This is an album for guitar and piano with a moderator. I also plan to record another solo album, but this time it will be a 100% composed album, no improvisation. I already have some of the material and I think it should be done within a few months. In 5 years I would like to play more concerts in Europe and around the world.

Tell our readers a funny episode that happened in your career as an artist.

A few years ago I played a concert at a viewpoint high above the treetops. I played long forms resembling moving clouds. I had been preparing for this concert for several months. I kept playing about those clouds in the sky. The next day I was at my friends house and there were a lot of artists there. I started playing this music on the guitar and at the same time a painter started painting something with watercolor paints. And you know what she painted while listening to my music?… Clouds
