Where Independent Music Finds Its Voice

Parle-nous de toi, qui es-tu et d'où viens-tu ?

I am Rob.V, musician & music producer from Western Australia. This song is a collaboration with UK DJ/Producer ‘Mistrust’ and first featured on my solo album ‘Illusions’ which was released in Feb, 2021. The remix has infused an electro dub downtempo vibe to the song and certainly has that UK flavour. This is my first time collaborating with another artist that is literally on the other side of the world. It’s been such a cool project and we are both stoked with how it turned out.

Comment est née ta passion pour la musique ? Qui sont tes idoles ?

Music has always been there from a young age. Growing up with my parents listening to the Beatles & ABBA and all the 70’s icons. Through the 80’s & 90’s I explored a heavier side of music as well as going backwards and discovering bands like the Stones, Who, Doors & Led Zeppelin. Grunge was a massive part of my teen years & still is but since then I have once again looked back and really gained appreciation for the 80’s pop music that didn’t connect with me fully at the time. Prince, Michael Jackson & The Police to name just a few. So many great songs hiding under that 80’s production. But still there was a lot of cool production ideas & sounds that came from the 80’s and I’m quite partial to reinventing some of the good ones. Ultimately I appreciate all types of music from across the spectrum.

Quel genre de musique fais-tu ?

I write & create a bit of a mix of styles really. It’s like everything that’s come out over my lifetime somehow enters my being & pops out here & there. My solo album definitely has a pop vibe with an 80’s flavour. Classic synth sounds mixed with funky bass lines & soulful vocals. You will also find acoustic & electric guitars & even strings & horns on some tracks. It’s a real mix. It always so hard to pigeon hole your style but I think it fits in the contemporary synth pop & rock category I guess.

Quelle est la chanson la plus importante pour toi ? Quel message veux-tu transmettre à l'auditeur ?

Well ‘New Age’ was a song that I was really happy with & did resonate with a lot of people. The fact that Tim (Mistrust) was captivated by that song too also adds to my reason for picking this song. New Age was my 2020 lockdown track and heaps of other artists have released songs about this time in all our lives. The original version definitely captured that almost apocalyptic atmosphere of deserted streets and the feeling of being isolated. I think it really came together as a complete story on this one.

Pourquoi un auditeur qui ne te connaît pas devrait-il écouter ta musique ?

I think for first time listeners, they will have an experience by checking out my music. It’s a bit of ride. Feel good pop songs & uplifting positive music. Then the flip side is the emotional personal tracks that really take it to another place. Not matter what mood your in or vibe your after there will be something here that will fit.

Quels sont tes projets futurs ? Où te vois-tu dans 5 ans ?

I am currently working on follow up material & will look at releasing some new singles over the next year and do some videos to accompany these new songs. I think it’s just a matter of keeping that creative flow going & seeing where it lands. Hopefully it speaks to people and they can get something out of it like I do from making it. The old 5years from now question! Well who knows really? Worldwide tour would be nice if we can all travel by then?

Raconte à nos lecteurs un épisode amusant qui s'est produit dans ta carrière d'artiste.

I was on tour with my band at the time & were on our way through the desert in North Australia. We had this show lined up in Port Hedland & I took a call from the venue owner saying ‘really sorry guys but a touring act is coming to town & wants to play the venue on the night you guys are booked.’ So I’m waiting for the ‘We have to cancel you’ speech. But no! Turns out the touring act wants us to play first & open for them! Shit yes! So we ended up playing a set before the legendary Aussie band ‘You Am I’ and got to hang with the boys afterwards. Rare moments but worked out awesome! Those guys are great!
