Where Independent Music Finds Its Voice

The song Highway Hopping by WUNSO is an autumn blues with UK garage influences. Super vibey but definitely club-ready. The content is about restlessness and the exhaustion of a workaholic existence that can never be satiated.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and where do you come from?

I’m Wunso, I come from Cologne, Germany and I’m a rapper & singer.

How was your passion for music born? Who are your idols?

I used to play piano since I was a little child. My mother always gave her best to support my creative skills so I guess my passion for music was born with my birth. But in 2007 when I was 14 years old I first visited the Summerjam Festival. A reggae festival in Cologne. Thats where I realized that I want to be on stages and perform. From 16 to 20 years old I used to play in Clubs as a MC for my DJ-Friends. Thats where I started rapping lyrics infront of an audience and I loved it so I decided to create songs and record them in the studio with my producer Loy Beatz. We did it and we never stopped so far. My Idols were danehall-artists like Vybz Kartel, Jahmiel and Popcaan but also rappers like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy and many many more.

What kind of music do you do?

Right now I’m doing a mix between German pop and Rap music with UK-Garage/ Two-Step influences wich is very rare in Germany. I love that style because its uplifting and also mellow. But I always used to do Rap and Trap music also and of course Dancehall and Reggae. That’s where it all started but since a year now I’m mainly focusing myself on that UK-Garage/ German pop thing.

What is the most important song for you? What message do you want to convey to the listener?

Puh, thats not an easy question. I guess every song is important for me. But a very special song is definetely Helium because of a very special inspiration I had. I was hella heartbroken so I wrote this song to deal with my emotions and everytime I hear or perform that song I feel like a delay of that pain that I felt is coming back. And the song is for every person that suffers from a heartbreak. Everybody who went throgh such a story knows how hard life can be in these times. But all in all I try to color life with every song that I make.

Why should a listener who doesn’t know you listen to your music?

My vision is to pay dues to an anticapitalist and diverse-cultural society for sustainability. I know that I can’t change the world alone but I can change a bit in some peoples minds while sharing a good spirit, raising awareness, uplift moods by my music and create a better every-day-life for many people. That’s what I try so if you feel me, you should listen to my music! <3 IKYK

What are your future projects? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I just started my band-project. Meaning, that all my songs get instrumentized by a live band and we already started rehearsing. The interpretations are crazy!! I love it. So I want to play big tours and play my music live on stages as much as possible. Plus I’m doing some social projects like ‘beats to think’ where we bring people with disabillities, refugees and people without one of these categories together to create music. And I want to increase that project and build more of them.

Tell our readers a funny episode that happened in your career as an artist.

In 2018 I played a support tour for my good friend shavu in Rwanda. After one show, a tall guy came to me and spoke to me in german. He gave me props and he said that he’s a cameraman also from cologne. So we decided to shoot a video in Kigali together and he became my steady cameraman. We met randomly in Kigali. That was crazy.
