Tell us about yourself, who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Kash Karter, I am a music producer, vocalist, songwriter and studio engineer. I grew up in the township of Soweto based in Gauteng, South Africa, currently situated in the city of Johannesburg. I have been an active musician since 2019.

How was your passion for music born? Who are your idols?

In Soweto, music is considered a cultural phenomenon as a majority of musicians dating back to the 2000s were from Soweto, particularly pioneers of genres known as Kwaito music and Kasi rap, which gained popularity at the time. I grew up in a musical home of which some of my siblings used to be stage performers – DJs, MCs and event hosts to be specific. As a rap fan I grew up listening to iconic South African rappers such as Emtee, A-Reece and the late AKA and Riky Rick. As time passed I would tune in to international acts such as Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, Kendrick Lamar, XXXTentacion and Kanye West, who later became an inspiration to the development of my sound.

What kind of music do you do?

My main genre is what I would call alternative hip-hop, characterized by a unique blend of genres, primarily contemporary R&B melodies and hip-hop rhythms which features heavy baselines, autotune and catchy hooks.

What is the most important song for you? What message do you want to convey to the listener?

One of the most important songs I’ve made is titled “Encounters”. The song marks a reflective journey, capturing that pivotal moment when one must weigh the value of personal relationships against the pursuit of dreams. It isn’t just a song; it’s an introspective journey that challenges us to question what truly matters in life.

Why should a listener who doesn’t know you listen to your music?

My music is not just chill and catchy but also deeply soulful and reflective, resonating with listeners who find themselves at similar crossroads in life.

What are your future projects? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Five years from now, I see myself as an established artist/producer, creating music that resonates with a wide audience. I want to keep refining my sound, collaborate with other creatives, and ideally be touring or releasing music under a label that supports innovation and authenticity.

Tell our readers a funny episode that happened in your career as an artist.

I was once booked at a local event to perform with a fellow collaborator. Due to miscommunication with an artist shuttle driver that was organized to take us to and from the event, I found myself left behind after the event. Since I was starving and fatigued from performing, I went to the nearest KFC to get a meal, while I was waiting for transport I found myself sleeping on the table only to be woken up by a worker claiming I had been sleeping for over an hour.
