Where Independent Music Finds Its Voice

Pip Turna On Feeling Like an Outsider, Love Songs, and Navigating TikTok as an Indie Musician

Pip Turna, a 20-year-old indie artist from the Czech Republic, is making waves with their unique blend of synthpop and horrorpunk, tackling complex themes like conformity, doomed love, and growing up queer. As a self-taught musician and producer, Pipā€™s creative process is deeply personal, with full control over every aspect of their artā€”from music production to video creation and social media.

Growing up with a love for musicals and Disneyā€™s animated classics, Pip started producing music in 2021 after years of creating covers. Influences range from rock icons like Green Day and The Cure to electronic stars like Grimes and Lady Gaga. Despite being rooted in pop-rock, Pipā€™s sound refuses to be boxed into one genre, blending electric guitars, synths, and 808s, depending on the mood. Dark yet upbeat, their songs are marked by a distinctive contrast between melancholic lyrics and energetic melodies. Pip, however, hasnā€™t ventured into writing traditional love songs yet, feeling that everything worth saying about love might already be said.

Pipā€™s most personal tracks reflect themes of isolation and resilience. For instance, ā€œHeā€™s Long Goneā€ transforms a painful experience into something upbeat and positive, while ā€œGreen With Envyā€ delves into the experience of being an outsiderā€”highlighting the loneliness and challenges of feeling perpetually misunderstood. Unlike music that romanticizes being different, Pip seeks to offer a more grounded, realistic view of the struggles that come with it.

In an era dominated by TikTok, Pip humbly acknowledges the challenges of standing out. Despite feeling that everything has been done before, they hope listeners recognize the hard work and passion they put into their art. Pip’s future projects include an upcoming single and a hope to continue developing as an artist over the next five years, growing in skill and finding better opportunities.

A memorable early moment for Pip was their first live performance at a high school talent show. Nerves, technical glitches, and two false starts later, the audience cheered them on as they won first placeā€”a fitting reminder of the resilience and humor Pip brings to their journey as a musician.

Through their music, Pip Turna invites listeners to explore the raw, unfiltered aspects of life, with an honesty and depth that resonates deeply, especially in todayā€™s fast-paced digital landscape.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and where do you come from?

I come from the Czech Republic, I am a 20 year old musician/producer/artist who likes to be in full creative control, from the music itself to videos and propagation.

How was your passion for music born? Who are your idols?

I’ve been making up little songs in my head since childhood as I’ve always loved musicals, especially Disney movies with singing. I first started to actually produce music in 2021, I’ve only been making covers up to that point. My idols, artists who influence me, would probably include Green Day, Avril Lavigne, The Cure, Grimes, Lady Gaga… Too many to choose from.

What kind of music do you do?

I would like to call it pop rock but honestly I have no idea. I just make what sounds right. Guitars are very important in my music, especially electric ones, but I do love me some synths, 808s and electronic drums. It all depends on the mood to be honest. Usually the songs have sad or dark lyrics but are upbeat, I love the contrast. I am yet to write an actual love song, it’s something I would love to do in the future but I am afraid everything I could say about love has been said before.

What is the most important song for you? What message do you want to convey to the listener?

That’s tough. “He’s Long Gone” is the most important to me personally at the moment as it is about a very tough time in my life and I turned it into something so cutesy and positive. But I think “Green With Envy” is also very important. It’s about feeling like an outcast, an outsider… And not romanticizing it. It feels like a lot of “edgy” music tries to romanticize the concept of being different and an outsider but there’s nothing nice about it. I think it’s important to talk about how lonely it gets when you feel misunderstood all the time by everyone. That’s what those two songs are about to me.

Why should a listener who doesnā€™t know you listen to your music?

To support a young self-taught artist who works hard on his art? I don’t know, I don’t think there’s anything too special about me or my music, especially in the age of TikTok. There’s so many talented, indie, self-taught musicians out there, it’s hard to stand out, everything has been done before… But if anybody gave me their time and checked my art out, it would make me very happy.

What are your future projects? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I am currently working on another musical project, a new single is slowly on its way. I just hope 5 years from now I’ll still have the same passion for art as I do now, except maybe with more skills and better conditions.

Tell our readers a funny episode that happened in your career as an artist.

In my first ever live performance, it was a talent competition at my high school, I was supposed to go first which was already scary in itself. But the worst part is I had to restart my performance two times because there were no recitals beforehand so the first time, the volume was too low and I could barely hear the backing track. The second time I found out my mic wasn’t on. Both me and the audience laughed it off though and in the end, I won first place. No setbacks can stop me.
