Where Independent Music Finds Its Voice

Reverliee: The Rise of a New Alternative Rock Voice Blending 90s Nostalgia with Modern Edge

In a recent interview, emerging artist Reverliee, born Mary and hailing from Greece, opened up about her journey as a musician. Though rooted in classical music from a young age, she has transitioned into the realms of alternative rock and pop, drawing heavily on the influences of ’90s and early 2000s icons like Placebo, Muse, and Depeche Mode.

Reverlieeā€™s passion for music was ignited by her grandfather, who introduced her to various artists and genres. She recalls the profound impact of seeing Placebo’s “Every You, Every Me” music video, which became a guiding influence in her musical evolution. Today, her sound is a blend of heavy guitars, classical piano, and electronic experimentation, reflecting her diverse influences.

Her debut single, “Valentine,” holds special significance as it allowed her to explore and solidify her sound. Inspired by a friend’s nostalgic tale of a first love, the song evolved into a narrative about a strong, independent womanā€”a recurring theme in her music. Reverliee’s aim is to create a safe space through her music, where listeners can escape their everyday lives and find strength and empowerment.

Looking ahead, Reverliee is excited about her future in music, with plans to release more singles and possibly an album. In five years, she hopes to continue making music that resonates with people and brings her joy. She also shared a lighthearted moment from her early performing days in Berlin, where she accidentally mixed up lyrics during a cover performance, much to the amusement of her fellow musicians and the audience.

Reverlieeā€™s music reflects her journeyā€”a fusion of classical training, alternative rock, and a deep commitment to conveying messages of independence and emotional resilience. With “Valentine” as her starting point, she is set to make her mark on the music scene.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Reverliee and my actual name is Mary. I was born and raised in Greece, but as an artist I am based between Greece and Berlin. I’ve been musically inclined from a very young age. The main influence in finding music was my family and especially my grandfather, who loved music and was introducing me to many artists. I have been a classical singer and active since a long time, but I decided to switch to a more contemporary, more rock genre. It’s so important for me to create and songwriting fulfils all my dreams and allows me to be fully myself. My debut single “Valentine” holds a very important place in my heart, because it allowed me to experiment with my sound and find influence from the 90s trends and my favourite artists.

How was your passion for music born? Who are your idols?

My passion for music starts primarily when I was 4 years old. My grandfather was the first person, who played me cassettes and used to talk to me about instruments and his favourite artists. I found my influences really early on though. The first band that I have first heard of was Placebo. I still remember the day I saw the “Every You, Every Me” music video. How people cheered and how they showed their concert. Ever since their music lead for me as a compass. Some other favourite artists of mine are Tokio Hotel and they played a very important role in my teenage years. Then I also love Muse, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Lana Del Rey and many more artists.

What kind of music do you do?

It’s so hard for me to define my music in own term. I find the power of songwriting a very unique and magic experience and it always changes. If I had to say something about my music I would say it swings between alternative rock and alternative pop music. I love heavy guitars very much, but at the same time, I love having a sort of a classical influence through piano melodies. I also enjoy really electronic and experimental sounds, that I really wish to include in my songwriting in the future.

What is the most important song for you? What message do you want to convey to the listener?

“Valentine” happed very spontaneously. I had this melodic idea, that I wrote on the bass and I knew I wanted to create a very specific story, but I wasn’t sure. Then I had this discussion with one of my good friends. He told me about his first love, he had in the 90s. About this very good girl, who always helped others and was very innocent and lovely, but she still broke his heart and immediately I wanted to write about this. After a few days I went to the studio and my producer, George Vasilas, is a very talented musician who guides and influences me a lot. We had this spontaneous conversation, about the 90s and told me all about the trends, the music… everything. I wrote the song when I went home, but I wanted so much to write about a stronger woman. Someone who’s independent and doesn’t belong to anyone and keeps all the memories for herself. As a female songwriter, it’s very important for me to underline that role and that influence in my music and bring forward this idea of the strong, independent woman.

Why should a listener who doesnā€™t know you listen to your music?

When creating music and when I write lyrics, I want to create a safe space for everyone. A safe space where people can forget about their every day lives for a while and enjoy the music. With Valentine, as I mentioned it’s important for me to sing about a strong woman, who stands on her own feet, only hoping that maybe a woman like me, out there may feel strong and careless wanting to dance to this. Overall my intention with my music in the future is to talk about topics and situations, so someone may not feel alone..

What are your future projects? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I’m only starting now with my music and I am very excited for this! For now in the next months, I would like to introduce my music to people and plan some other single releases. Is there an idea of an album in the future? Maybe yes, maybe no… In 5 years I can only hope to be satisfied and happy with what I do and I can interact with people, through what makes me happy, which is music.

Tell our readers a funny episode that happened in your career as an artist.

My career as a songwriter is relatively new, so there not many episodes so far… I think an episode that I can recall is playing covers at a bar in Berlin and I completely changed the lyrics and I had no idea what happened and why the other musicians looked at me a little weird. I looked back and I had no idea and the moment I realised I just gasped very dramatically and they laughed and the audience was very cool about it, so we just kept going… But such episodes are so real and always part of the performing, so I like to witness even when I get to see a show.
